Today, 3D art is a lot more like photography than it is art especially if you are attempting a photoreal result.  However, it is, in fact, both.  Not only do you have to compose a scene of 3D objects as you would a painting, you have to place the camera, choose depth of field and place lighting to make the scene appears to be a photo.  The more I can make the image photographic, the more satisfied I am with the result. What exactly is art? That is the age old question. It doesn't matter if you're talking about 'old' medium such as paint, canvas, pencil, clay, or metal or if you are discussing 'new' medium such as Poser, Daz, Bryce, Photoshop, Z-Brush or even Maya.
